Shooting the Grundy County Courthouse in Daylight

A while back I posted a night photo of the Grundy County Courthouse. Linda and I were passing through in the morning so I took this shot to supplement the earlier post. I like all the variety in surfaces of this courthouse. Most of the newer structures are pretty boxlike; this has curves and the clock tower; pretty asymmetric to keep my eye entertained and my mind wondering about the layout. Anyway, while I liked the glowing night shot, I'm glad to get a daytime image posted as well.

Shooting the Poweshiek County Courthouse

Montezuma is the county seat of Poweshiek County and this is their courthouse. It looks more like a school than what I think of as a courthouse. Maybe it looks more New England than Midwestern to me. Whatever it is, it's a nice looking courthouse located on the square.

Shooting the Jones County Courthouse

Anamosa is the county seat of Jones County and this is their courthouse. Set back on a hill overlooking the highway, it's an imposing structure. I like the mature trees and the detail on the building. It's what I've come to expect in courthouses in Iowa.

Shooting the Jackson County Courthouse

Maquoketa is the count seat of Jackson County and this is their courthouse. This is one of the more recent constructions we've seen and, unfortunately, it's not among my favorites.

Shooting the Dubuque County Courthouse

Dubuque is the county seat of Dubuque County and this is their courthouse. This gold-capped Beaux-Arts courthouse reminds me of the pyramids of Egypt (not that I've been there, but you may see what I'm talking about too.) I like the contrasting red and white blocks that come together to form this hall of justice.

Shooting the Clayton County Courthouse

Elkader is the county seat of Clayton County and this is their courthouse. Located astride the Turkey River, this community experienced some of the flooding earlier in the year. By the time Linda and I arrived, the waters had receeded and cleanup had already made the town presentable; I do remember seeing some high water marks out around the ball fields but that's why the parks and ball fields are there rather than homes.

Shooting the Allamakee County Courthouse

Waukon is the county seat of Allamakee County and this is their courthouse. Waukon is a pretty nice looking town to pass through and probably a nice place to live. That said, not a lot caught my eye to comment on further.

Shooting the Winneshiek County Courthouse

Decorah is the county seat of Winneshiek County and this is their courthouse.

Shooting the Fayette County Courthouse

West Union is the county seat of Fayette County and this is their courthouse. This is a nice looking courthouse and I like that people enjoy decorating the grounds, at least for the fall season. It felt like part of the community and really did look like a good part of the town.

Shooting the Butler County Courthouse

Allison is the county seat of Butler county and this is their courthouse. Located at the north end of the business district, it's very easy to find. The main thing that I know about Allison is that it's the home town of Linda's son-in-law so it was nice to get stop by.

Shooting the Audubon County Courthouse

Audubon is the county seat of Audubon County and this is their courthouse. Unfortunately, the only claim to fame that either I or Wikipedia know about Audubon is that it is home to Albert the Bull. Linda and I stopped by and saw Albert about a year ago ... before I realized that Audubon is a county seat.

Shooting the Adams County Courthouse

Corning is the county seat of Adams County and this is their courthouse. Birthplace of long time Tonight Show host, Johnny Carson, Corning is located on the slope of one of the rolling hills in the area. This relatively modern courthouse is located near the top of the hill and has a night park area on the slope below.

Shooting the Union County Courthouse

Creston is the county seat of Union County and this is their courthouse. It's also situated at a railroad crossroads with Amtrack passenger service and the Burlington Northern Santa Fe. While we were there, we had to wait for at least one train at a multi-track crossing. My recollection is of several sidings or a switchyard near the center of town. It was clearly a railroad town.

Shooting the Boone County Courthouse

Boone is the county seat of Boone County and this is their courthouse. Located on the west side of Boone, it took us a few tries to locate this one. It's set amongst several mature trees so my photo options were somewhat limited; this is the best shot of the overall structure I could find. This is a classic, big block, stone stucture that clearly communicates stability and authority; we're here, we're stayin'.

Wikipedia states the claim that Boone has the 2nd most used bowling alley in the state. A more verifiable claim is that First Lady Mamie Doud Eisenhower was born in Boone.

Shooting the Clarke County Courthouse

Osceola is the county seat of Clarke County and this is their courthouse. Located in the middle of a somewhat wooded square, it sits somewhat shielded from view. It's a good looking building but seems to have fewer windows than most; probably a security or energy conservation consideration but it does give a little different appearance.

Shooting the Lucas County Courthouse

Chariton is the county seat of Lucas County and this is their courthouse. The tower on this courthouse is certainly an imposing sight. Solid as a rock and well attended, this massive courthouse is featured on the square within their handsome and active business district.

Shooting the Wayne County Courthouse

Corydon is the county seat of Wayne County and this is their courthouse. Clearly one of the newer courthouses, this building is prominent on a classic square. Just to the north on the square is a nice bandshell with several park benches with family names "monogrammed" into the backs; they're pretty typical weatherproofed pierced steel benches but they were manufactured with holes that spell out names, assumably of contributors. Some of them are clearly in better locations: closer to the stage or located under a nice shade tree. One of the benches had a great location under a nice big tree until recently; the tree is now gone and the large, grass level stump that remains doesn't give much shade.

Shooting the Decatur County Courthouse

Leon is the county seat of Decatur County and this is their courthouse. Located north of the highway but in the middle of the business district, it wasn't hard to find this classic courthouse. I like the airy tower on this building.

Shooting the Ringgold County Courthouse

Mount Ayr is the county seat of Ringgold County and this is their courthouse. As you can see, it's a substantial block of bricks and has that government office building look about it. I'm sure it serves it's citizens well; I just prefer the older, more distinctive structures.

Shooting the Taylor County Courthouse

Bedford is the county seat of Taylor County. This is one of the more attractive courthouses I've seen. It's located on a slight hill in a nice square with mature trees and classic brick paved streets surrounding the grounds. To the east, on the same grounds is the sheriff's office; a very nice brick building probably built about the same time. Very nice.
