Visiting the Woudstra Butcher Shop

While in Orange City, Linda and I stopped at De Slagerij (Dutch for the butcher's shop) to see if we could find a bratwurst from Woudstra's meat market that would count toward the 100 Foods list. We found the market and stepped into the a space that says butcher shop.

The front of the store was clean and spacious. In the center was a small display table with Dutch cookies and treats. Along the walls were handsome cases of prepackaged cheeses and meats; one was a freezer, the other refrigerated. Beyond them was a broad meat and cheese display case filled with great looking cuts of meat and cheese. Behind the counter were butchers going about their business. Beyond them were the large refrigerated lockers. Along the wall on the right we noticed a laminated copy of the list of 100 foods; clearly, they were aware.

The man behind the counter greeted us and we complimented the shop. Soon, he was offering us a sample of their farmer's bologna. I'm not sure what makes it farmer's bologna but it was good. He then offered us a bit of their dried beef; tasty as well. We asked about the bratwurst and learned that we were a day late. On Thursdays, they had a booth where freshly grilled bratwurst was available. We asked about other options and learned that, in the freezer case, we could find a package of grilled brats. After a little consideration, we got one of the frozen grilled brats ... and a package of excellent jerky. A few hours later, after the brat had thawed, we were able to enjoy that as well and mark it off our list.
